Birketts—Laura Gardner

Law firm welcomes senior associate
Trade Mark Attorney Laura Gardner has recently joined Birketts’ Intellectual Property Team.

With more than seven years’ experience in the field of trade mark law and intellectual property rights, Laura advises clients on trade mark and design filing strategies in the UK and worldwide, as well as liaising with international lawyers to ensure applications abroad are proceeding smoothly. She also drafts objections, oppositions, invalidation and revocation applications with the UK intellectual property offices and liaises with associates to do the same before the EU intellectual property office and other national IP offices, as well as negotiating co-existence and acquisitions.

Speaking of her appointment, Laura said: 'I’m excited to join Birketts and get to work for my new clients. Melanie [head of the Brands Team] has gone to great lengths to make me feel welcome and it’s clear my first impression of Birketts was the right one. The firm has the same ethos of client care, something that’s crucial in this industry. Intellectual property can hold a huge monetary value and can be of the upmost importance to their owners, which makes the protection, as well as the exploitation, of them paramount.'

Head of the Brands Team in Birketts’ Corporate Team, Melanie Harvey, added: 'Laura brings a huge amount of experience to the role and she will bring a new dimension to the service our clients receive. Her experience with international trade marks fits our global outlook perfectly.'

NEWS

From blockbuster judgments to procedural shake-ups, the courts are busy reshaping litigation practice. Writing in NLJ this week, Professor Dominic Regan of City Law School hails the Court of Appeal's 'exquisite judgment’ in Mazur restoring the role of supervised non-qualified staff, and highlights a ‘mammoth’ damages ruling likened to War and Peace, alongside guidance on medical reporting fees, where a pragmatic 25% uplift was imposed

Momentum is building behind proposals to restrict children’s access to social media—but the legal and practical challenges are formidable. In NLJ this week, Nick Smallwood of Mills & Reeve examines global moves, including Australia’s under-16 ban and the UK's consultation
Reforms designed to rebalance landlord-tenant relations may instead penalise leaseholders themselves. In this week's NLJ, Mike Somekh of The Freehold Collective warns that the Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024 risks creating an ‘underclass’ of resident-controlled freehold companies
Timing is everything—and the Court of Appeal has delivered clarity on when proceedings are ‘brought’. In his latest 'Civil way' column for NLJ, Stephen Gold explains that a claim is issued for limitation purposes when the claim form is delivered to the court, even if fees are underpaid
The traditional ‘single, intensive day’ of financial dispute resolution (FDR) may be due for a rethink. Writing in NLJ this week, Rachel Frost-Smith and Lauren Guiler of Birketts propose a ‘split FDR’ model, separating judicial evaluation from negotiation
