The BP Deepwater Horizon oilrig disaster off the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 had a far-reaching impact on health and safety regulation, prompting the European Commission to look at the safety of offshore oil and gas activities, and to conclude that existing regulation was inadequate. The Commission has now introduced new regulations for offshore exploration.
