Head of construction and engineering team appointed

Irwin Mitchell has appointed Vijay Bange as partner and head of its national construction & engineering team. Based in London, Vijay brings more than 30 years of experience from senior roles at Trowers & Hamlins, Pinsent Masons and, most recently, as chair of the international arbitration division and construction lead partner at Duane Morris. He will focus on growing the national practice, developing an arbitration offering in the capital, and expanding work through the firm’s international desks.

Vijay’s clients include developers, contractors, sub-contractors, consultants and manufacturers across sectors such as property, infrastructure, engineering, energy, manufacturing and pharmaceuticals. He said: ‘I’m thrilled to join Irwin Mitchell at such an exciting time of growth. The opportunity to shape and grow a national team, while leveraging my international network and sector experience, is something I’m looking forward to.’

Welcoming his arrival, Guy Sackett, national head of real estate at Irwin Mitchell, commented: ‘Vijay is vastly experienced, and his appointment marks another step forward as we continue to grow our construction capabilities. His leadership, deep sector knowledge, and proven ability to build successful teams will be instrumental in helping us deliver even greater value to our clients.’

Vijay’s appointment follows the recent hire of construction disputes partner Alex Delin from Fieldfisher and builds on the firm’s strong non-contentious construction practice, led by partner Robert Tunningley. Together, these hires underline Irwin Mitchell’s continued investment in strengthening its national construction offering.

Non-molestation orders are meant to be the frontline defence against domestic abuse, yet their enforcement often falls short. Writing in NLJ this week, Jeni Kavanagh, Jessica Mortimer and Oliver Kavanagh analyse why the criminalisation of breach has failed to deliver consistent protection
Assisted dying remains one of the most fraught fault lines in English law, where compassion and criminal liability sit uncomfortably close. Writing in NLJ this week, Julie Gowland and Barny Croft of Birketts examine how acts motivated by care—booking travel, completing paperwork, or offering emotional support—can still fall within the wide reach of the Suicide Act 1961
The long-awaited Getty Images v Stability AI judgment arrived at the end of last year—but not with the seismic impact many expected. In this week's issue of NLJ, experts from Arnold & Porter dissect a ruling that is ‘historic’ yet tightly confined
The UK Supreme Court may be deciding fewer cases, but its impact in 2025 was anything but muted. In this week's NLJ, Professor Emeritus Brice Dickson of Queen’s University Belfast reviews a year marked by historically low output, a striking rise in jointly authored judgments, and a continued decline in dissent. High-profile rulings on biological sex under the Equality Act, public access to Dartmoor, and fairness in sexual offence trials ensured the court’s voice carried far beyond the Strand
