Johnson lies prosecution stopped

Lady Justice Rafferty and Mr Justice Supperstone have quashed a court summons to prosecute Conservative Party leadership contender Boris Johnson MP over false Brexit claims

The High Court judges said they would give their reasons at a later date.

In May, District Judge Margot Coleman had held there was sufficient evidence for the trial to go ahead. The crowdfunded private prosecution, brought by campaigner Marcus Ball, alleged Johnson had committed the common law offence of misconduct in public office during the EU referendum campaign in 2016 and in 2017 by lying to the British public that EU membership cost £350m per week.

Johnson’s legal team argued the claim was ‘vexatious’ and a ‘stunt’.
