The government has proposed renewing and extending indefinitely the Holocaust (Return of Cultural Objects) Act 2009 to give national museums powers to return works looted during the Third Reich.
The Act, which gave 17 galleries and museums powers to return items stolen during the Nazi era, is due to expire on 11 November 2019. The government will also call for greater co-operation between countries to speed up the return of Nazi-looted art to original owners, at an international conference in London in September, ‘70 Years and Counting: The final opportunity?’
