The geographical council seats would be reduced from 61 to 46, and extra seats allocated to others including in-house lawyers, junior lawyers, women’s representatives. David Greene (pictured), who took over as Law Society president this week, said the shake-up would ‘make the council more representative of the modern profession’. One in five council members has currently served more than 12 years.
Both proposals were supported at the AGM this week. However, more than 20 attendees requested a member-wide electronic poll. In line with AGM rules, solicitors will now be given an opportunity to vote on the issues. If passed, council members with more than 12 years’ service will be unable to seek re-election once their current term ends.
The AGM was moved from July to October to bring it in line with the legal year, and held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Greene replaced Simon Davis as president, while I. Stephanie Boyce took over as vice president and Lubna Shuja took over as deputy vice president.
