NLJ this week: Court of Appeals wrestles with Mazur fallout

243966
The long-running Mazur saga edged towards its finale as the Court of Appeal heard arguments on whether non-solicitors can ‘conduct litigation’. Writing in NLJ this week, Professor Dominic Regan of City Law School reports from a packed courtroom where 16 wigs watched Nick Bacon KC argue that Mr Justice Sheldon had failed to distinguish between ‘tasks and responsibilities’

The Master of the Rolls was ‘on sparkling form throughout', Regan writes.

Critics warned that restricting delegation would hit underfunded law centres, while the Solicitors Regulation Authority came under fire for years of apparent acquiescence. With authorities such as Baxter under scrutiny and the ‘legitimacy of Mazur itself’ in play, a judgment of ‘epic length’ may follow.
