Oval Four cleared

The Court of Appeal has quashed the convictions of three members of the Oval Four

The four men were arrested together in 1972 at Oval Station, London by police sent to target thefts on the Northern Line. Last week, three of the men, Winston Trew, Sterling Christie and George Griffiths had their convictions quashed on the basis of police misconduct. Their cases were referred by the Criminal Cases Review Commission on the basis they were unsafe. The police operation was led by Detective Sergeant Derek Ridgewell, who was later convicted of conspiracy to steal and sent to prison.
