The number of children taken without permission from the UK is increasing, with a 10% rise in the number of cases in the past 12 months, according to the Foreign Office
Solicitors have warned that the summer holidays are a high-risk time for parental abductions, with Pakistan, Thailand and India being the most common destinations.
The number of children taken to countries that have not signed up to the 1980 Hague Convention, and therefore are not compelled to comply with a UK court order, is up from 146 to 161.
Charles Russell partner, Sarah Whitten said: “Legal rights for the parent trying to obtain ‘custody’ can be very limited. In some countries, especially those who have Sharia law, there will be an assumption that after a certain age children will live with their father.”
