Senior associate joins construction and engineering team

RWK Goodman has announced that Patrick Duggan has joined the firm’s construction and engineering team as a senior associate.

Based in the Bath office, Patrick, who joins from Taylor Rose, is a construction disputes specialist with a background in quantity surveying and has worked predominantly in commercial litigation since he qualified as a solicitor in 1999.

Patrick is able to support clients across the whole range of issues that typically crop up in construction disputes including the design and construction of commercial and residential developments, civil engineering works, including road, rail, tunnelling and pipeline projects, retail and leisure projects, educational facilities and research laboratories, power generation and transmission projects, mechanical, electrical and water treatment plant, and renewable energy projects, both on and offshore.

As a former quantity surveyor, Patrick has in-depth experience of construction and engineering projects. This knowledge means he is always quick to grasp the relevant issues and is able to help his clients move to a resolution in as short a timeframe as possible.  Notably Patrick also has higher rights of audience which allow him to represent his clients in court.

Patrick says: 'Construction & engineering disputes are for me the more interesting side of the law. They allow you to sometimes deal with very technical issues and sometimes to get stuck in and get your hands dirty with the more basic realities of building.  RWK Goodman has a leading reputation in this discipline and I am delighted to have  joined  their team in Bath.'

In this week's NLJ, Anjali Malik, partner at Bellevue Law, and Mukhtiar Singh, barrister at Doughty Street Chambers, review a bumper year of appellate guidance clarifying how tribunals should approach ‘actual’ and ‘evidential’ comparators. A new six-stage framework stresses a simple starting point: identify the treatment first
In cross-border divorces, domicile can decide everything. In NLJ this week, Jennifer Headon, legal director and head of international family, Isobel Inkley, solicitor, and Fiona Collins, trainee solicitor, all at Birketts LLP, unpack a Court of Appeal ruling that re-centres nuance in jurisdiction disputes. The court held that once a domicile of choice is established, the burden lies on the party asserting its loss
Early determination is no longer a novelty in arbitration. In NLJ this week, Gustavo Moser, arbitration specialist lawyer at Lexis+, charts the global embrace of summary disposal powers, now embedded in the Arbitration Act 1996 and mirrored worldwide. Tribunals may swiftly dismiss claims with ‘no real prospect of succeeding’, but only if fairness is preserved
