David Lammy MP, a graduate of the School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS) school of law, will deliver its inaugural inception lecture
He will speak on "Direct Action: A Necessary Prescription for Democracy?", drawing on the history of direct action and civil disobedience, from Gandhi’s nonviolent resistance to British rule in India to the campaign against South African apartheid. His speech will cover the Arab Spring and the recent riots in his Tottenham constituency. The lecture is to be an annual event, and will be open to all students, practitioners and the general public.
