Time for a jolly holiday?

Dominic Regan provides a cut-out-and-keep list of handy travel hints to pack alongside your passport

I adore my holidays, and have just enjoyed a delightful sojourn in Paris. What follows are some practical tips to ensure that you avoid grief and silly expense, wherever you might be going. I implore you to take note of at least my first three suggestions.

1 Check all passports now—and please don’t forget to pack them! Some countries require that there be six months’ validity left beyond your return date. You can check the entry requirements of every country in the world on the Foreign Office website (www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice). The Passport Office, unlike many a government department, is incredibly efficient and friendly. Check to see if visas are required, for example, if you are off to Turkey. When applying online, ensure that it is the official website of the country concerned. Lots of despicable outfits offer the visa and add on fat mark-ups for just doing what you can do for yourself.
