More people than ever before are leaving money to charity in their will, consumer research by nfpSynergy, shows
An annual
study by the charity coalition Remember A Charity published this month found that 27% of charity
donors aged 40 years and above have written a gift to charity in their will or
are preparing to do so. This compares to 21% of donors in this age group a
decade ago.
Only 9% of
donors in the 40-plus age bracket rejected the idea of leaving a charitable
bequest.
Among
solicitors and will writers, more than two-thirds (68%) always or sometimes
raise the topic of gifts in will with their clients.
Rob Cope,
director of Remember A Charity, said: ‘This is hugely important for the
nation’s charities, bringing in over £3 billion annually and funding vital
services across the country.
‘Solicitors
and Will-writers play a key role in raising awareness about charitable
bequests, communicating the tax benefits and the ease of leaving a legacy,
while ensuring that clients’ families and friends are taken care of.’
In 2019, 15.8%
of wills going through probate included a charitable bequest.
