Distorted figures on fraud in motor insurance claims have been “swallowed whole by the government” and used to target injured motorists, the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (Apil) has warned. Apil president Jonathan Wheeler said motor insurance fraud was “a fraction of the level so often touted by the insurance industry” and used to justify proposals to abolish compensation for some whiplash injuries. Wheeler said only 0.25% of motor claims are actually proven to be fraudulent.
