Birketts—Jane Johnson

Legal director joins private client advisory team

Birketts has appointed Jane Johnson as a new legal director in its private client advisory team.

With more than 20 years’ legal experience, 15 of those spent as a chartered tax adviser, Jane has an extensive and detailed understanding of tax, trusts and estate planning for UK and non-UK resident and domiciled clients. At her previous law firm, she provided advice to a wide range of clients including high net worth individuals, private banks and other financial institutions. Jane is particularly skilled with matters of complex precedent and bespoke trust documentation, as well as tax issues and the implications of moving to or leaving the UK and asset holding structures advising on trust law issues, UK tax and policy documentation

Jane said: ‘I’m excited to join Birketts’ Private Client Advisory Team and work with a team with such a diverse wealth of experience. Tax planning and trusts are matters that frequently arise in work for both individuals and businesses, so the large number of high net worth clients and blue-chip companies Birketts advises will undoubtedly produce some complex and unique problems I look forward to solving.’

Partner Louise Long said: ‘Jane is a tremendous lawyer and will be a great asset to our clients. Birketts handles a wide variety of matters for individuals and these are usually complex and multi-faceted, so Jane’s expert insight into tax planning will be a huge help not only for our private clients but also for our employment, immigration, property and litigation lawyers.

‘Our clients call our Private Client Advisory Team when they need our help with something of importance or significance. They expect to receive practical, reliable and experienced advice consistent in its quality, and it is clear from Jane’s exemplary record of client service that they will receive exactly that.’

Writing in NLJ this week, Professor Dominic Regan of City Law School hails the Court of Appeal's 'exquisite judgment’ in Mazur restoring the role of supervised non-qualified staff, and highlights a ‘mammoth’ damages ruling likened to War and Peace, alongside guidance on medical reporting fees, where a pragmatic 25% uplift was imposed

Momentum is building behind proposals to restrict children’s access to social media—but the legal and practical challenges are formidable. In NLJ this week, Nick Smallwood of Mills & Reeve examines global moves, including Australia’s under-16 ban and the UK's consultation
Reforms designed to rebalance landlord-tenant relations may instead penalise leaseholders themselves. In this week's NLJ, Mike Somekh of The Freehold Collective warns that the Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024 risks creating an ‘underclass’ of resident-controlled freehold companies
Timing is everything—and the Court of Appeal has delivered clarity on when proceedings are ‘brought’. In his latest 'Civil way' column for NLJ, Stephen Gold explains that a claim is issued for limitation purposes when the claim form is delivered to the court, even if fees are underpaid
The traditional ‘single, intensive day’ of financial dispute resolution (FDR) may be due for a rethink. Writing in NLJ this week, Rachel Frost-Smith and Lauren Guiler of Birketts propose a ‘split FDR’ model, separating judicial evaluation from negotiation
