Senior judge Sir Brian Leveson has suggested more resources may be needed if the justice system is to be seen as ‘premier league’. Delivering the inaugural Criminal Cases Review Commission lecture last week, Sir Brian said: ‘The success of any system to achieve its aims is a product of the resources it is provided with… The question is: do we have the resources for the premier league, for the Championship or non-league football?’ Both the police and the CPS are operating with ‘stretched resources’, he said, while criminal practice is no longer seen as an attractive career path.
