GAMBLING AD BAN

In brief

Around 1,000 gambling websites may be banned from advertising in the UK following a government crackdown. New regulations being laid in Parliament use powers in the Gambling Act 2005 to ban gambling adverts from companies operating outside the European Economic Area. The move means some popular gaming websites will not be able to advertise in the UK from 1 September 2007. Jurisdictions that want to be exempt from the ban have to pass a stringent assessment of their regulatory standards to show they are designed to stop children gambling, protect vulnerable people, keep games fair and keep out crime.

Detection, investigation and prosecution all require improvement, while different fraud types demand tailored responses.
