Former Attorney-General Dominic Grieve has hit out at the current Justice Secretary’s views on Brexit.
Grieve said Michael Gove was making statements “which simply don’t bear scrutiny”.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme earlier this week, Gove said the European Court of Justice had increased its powers over the UK’s affairs through the new charter of fundamental rights, and could now control the how the UK applied its asylum policy, who it could deport and how it monitored suspected terrorists.
However, Grieve, also appearing on the programme, dismissed the claims as “simply wrong”, “unfounded and indeed untenable”. He said EU treaties do not include national security.
Gove expanded on his statements in a major speech this week.
