Where a person is liable to removal from the UK for a breach of immigration rules but has mar­ried a person settled in this country, the effect of the removal on the spouse is an important consideration in deciding whether removal is proportionate for the purposes of Art 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (the right to family life).
