The Ministry of Justice has published Lord Chancellor Robert Buckland's speech during London International Disputes Week
Lexis®Library update: In his speech, Buckland sets out the government’s current thinking on whether the UK should sign and ratify the Singapore Convention of Mediation, which is that doing so would ‘maintain London and the UK as an attractive Disputes Resolution hub, and, more generally, would promote international mediation’.
He also confirms that the government is to soon open a public consultation on the convention in an effort to comprehend what its impact on the sector would be. Buckland also contends in his speech that the European Commission’s position on the Lugano Convention (namely that membership is linked to the EU’s internal market) has ‘no legal basis’. He argues that the convention is an international agreement open to third parties, with no requirement for single market membership.
