The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) and HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) have reported that one million pleas have now been made online in the criminal courts, since the implementation of the digital plea service in 2014, as part of the HMCTS Reform Programme.
Lexis®Library update: The digital service replaced the old postal system, where defendants facing non-imprisonable motoring offences were required to indicate their plea by posting the document back to the courts.
The MoJ has stated that the ability to make pleas online has allowed for efficient case management, saved court staff time and improved access to justice.
