The family law specialist reveals the challenges of establishing her own practice
Award-winning family law solicitor Elizabeth Hassall has more than 20 years’ experience in her specialist field. She has recently launched a new independent practice in Manchester.
What was your route into the profession?
I undertook work experience at a local solicitor’s firm, aged 15. This led to a very precious offer of articles if I wanted to pursue it. I had never considered a career in law prior to that time. This very much dictated my choice of further education including A levels, degree and Law Society finals at Guildford.
What has been your biggest career challenge so far?
Deciding to establish my own specialist family law practice. The challenge was the timing of the decision and once the decision was made there have never been any regrets.
Which person within the legal profession inspires you most?
If you were not a lawyer, what would you choose as an alternative career?
Probably establishing my own specialist gardening business! I love creating a garden and have been lucky in acquiring a 50-year-old walled garden when we purchased our home.
Who is your favourite fictional lawyer?
Rumpole of the Bailey of course.
What change would you make to the profession?
A more relaxed model to allow individuals to be creative and entrepreneurial rather than tied to desks, business plans and endless meetings!
How do you relax?
Gardening and then a hot bath!
