Matthew Whalley—EY

Firm bolsters its legal practice with a key new hire

EY has announced that Matthew Whalley will be joining the firm in January 2016 as a director in its growing legal services practice, to spearhead EY’s legal risk practice. Matthew joins from Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) where he was head of legal risk.

Matthew’s legal career spans ten years, and he is recognised within the industry as having a leading voice on legal risk and other areas, such as contract robotics. His appointment to EY is in line with the firm’s ambitions to double its legal services team in the UK by the end of 2016.

Matthew Kellett, EY’s financial services UK law leader, says: “I’m delighted to welcome Matthew to our growing team, which is now over 30 people-strong in the UK. At a time when the regulatory lens is so keenly focused on how financial services firms are managing their risk, Matthew’s expertise will be extremely welcome to our financial services clients. Systematic assessment and mitigation of legal risk is a relatively new area and combines EY’s legal ambitions with its proven expertise in the risk assessment and mitigation arenas.”

Matthew Whalley adds: “I am thrilled to be joining EY at such an exciting time in its growth. Since the crisis, financial services firms have been under increased scrutiny to map and manage their risk, so I am delighted to be joining a firm which is building its legal service offerings in such a relevant area to support its clients.”
