McDermott Will & Emery—Marcia Shekerdemian QC

McDermott continues expansion of its Global Restructuring and Insolvency Practice

International law firm McDermott Will & Emery has announced the appointment Marcia Shekerdemian QC as senior consultant in its Global Restructuring and Insolvency Practice in London. Marcia remains in independent practice as a barrister at Wilberforce Chambers where she will continue to provide specialist advisory services to clients and lead Wilberforce’s Restructuring and Insolvency Group.

“We are thrilled to have Marcia join our London practice as she has vast experience from the Bar and is a senior leading female voice in our industry. She will be joining a vibrant team with an outstanding Finance and Restructuring & Insolvency capability that has grown significantly over the past 18 months with the appointments of Mark Fennessy, Sunay Radia, Ranajoy Basu, Mark Fine and Aymen Mahmoud,” said Hamid Yunis, Managing Partner of McDermott’s London Office.

Marcia is a leading practitioner in all aspects of contentious and non-contentious insolvency, company and partnership law as well as commercial litigation. Her work encompasses both domestic and international matters. She has appeared in the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands and in the Isle of Man. Marcia also sits in the High Court as a Deputy Insolvency and Companies Judge. In addition, she is well known for her work in equality and diversity, in particular support for women at the Bar; she is the author of the Chancery Bar Association’s 2021 Report “Voices of Women at the Chancery Bar”.

Mark Fennessy, London Head of Restructuring & Insolvency at McDermott, added: “Marcia is a remarkable appointment for our London Restructuring & Insolvency team that will also benefit our global practice.  We have worked with Marcia for many years and envisage her outstanding experience at the Bar augmenting the skills we currently have in our team. With the simultaneous increase in volume of distressed businesses and contentious matters, we anticipate that more cases will end up in court, making Marcia’s expertise invaluable to our clients and offering.”

Marcia Shekerdemian QC said, “I’m very excited to be joining the fantastic McDermott team. Mark, Sunay and I have worked together over the years on a number of cases and I consider their team to be one of the strongest that I have worked with, both in the UK and internationally. Recently they have been engaged on some complex and high profile restructurings, including European TopSoho, DTEK, Travelex, Greensill and Codere.”

Wilberforce Practice Director, Nick Luckman commented, “McDermott is a valued client, and I am delighted that Marcia will be working more closely with the Restructuring and Insolvency Practice as a Senior Consultant. This is an excellent arrangement that also supports her ability to continue to provide specialist advisory services to Wilberforce clients and remain a valuable member of the Insolvency Group at Wilberforce.”

From blockbuster judgments to procedural shake-ups, the courts are busy reshaping litigation practice. Writing in NLJ this week, Professor Dominic Regan of City Law School hails the Court of Appeal's 'exquisite judgment’ in Mazur restoring the role of supervised non-qualified staff, and highlights a ‘mammoth’ damages ruling likened to War and Peace, alongside guidance on medical reporting fees, where a pragmatic 25% uplift was imposed

Momentum is building behind proposals to restrict children’s access to social media—but the legal and practical challenges are formidable. In NLJ this week, Nick Smallwood of Mills & Reeve examines global moves, including Australia’s under-16 ban and the UK's consultation
Reforms designed to rebalance landlord-tenant relations may instead penalise leaseholders themselves. In this week's NLJ, Mike Somekh of The Freehold Collective warns that the Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024 risks creating an ‘underclass’ of resident-controlled freehold companies
Timing is everything—and the Court of Appeal has delivered clarity on when proceedings are ‘brought’. In his latest 'Civil way' column for NLJ, Stephen Gold explains that a claim is issued for limitation purposes when the claim form is delivered to the court, even if fees are underpaid
The traditional ‘single, intensive day’ of financial dispute resolution (FDR) may be due for a rethink. Writing in NLJ this week, Rachel Frost-Smith and Lauren Guiler of Birketts propose a ‘split FDR’ model, separating judicial evaluation from negotiation
