Lawyers and legal professionals rewarded in the 2018 New Year honours list include a Slaughter & May partner, a former Chief Magistrate for England and Wales, and the current Lord Lyon.
Nilufer von Bismarck, head of equity capital markets at Magic Circle firm Slaughter & May, receives an OBE for services to financial services. She has been a partner at the firm since 1994, and is known as a leading capital markets lawyer.
Howard Riddle, who served as Chief Magistrate (Senior District Judge) from 2010 to 2016, receives a CBE for services to the administration of justice. He qualified as a solicitor in 1978 and became a stipendiary magistrate in 1993.
Dr Joseph Morrow QC, president of the Mental Health Tribunal for Scotland, receives a CBE for public service to Mental Health. Dr Morrow, an advocate, is also the current Lord Lyon King of Arms, the Scottish judge in charge of the oldest heraldic court in the world. He has his own crown and is responsible for confirming pedigrees and claims to arms, clan chiefs and tartans.
CBEs also go to: Sean Dennehey, deputy chief executive of the Intellectual Property Office; Anne McGaughrin, legal director for the Department for Education, Government Legal Department; Kevin Sadler, director, Courts and Tribunals Development, HM Courts and Tribunals Service; and Deborah Walsh, deputy head of counter terrorism, Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division, Crown Prosecution Service.
OBEs go to: Caroline Docherty, Deputy Keeper of the Signet; David Greensmith, Justices' Clerk, HM Courts and Tribunals Service, for services to justice and to scouting; Robert Neil, head of Project Race, Ministry of Justice, for services to race equality in the workplace and the community; and Dr Lesley Sawers, Equality and Human Rights Commissioner for Scotland.
MBEs are awarded to: David Burn for services to the Magistracy and the community in Hexham, Northumberland; Margaret McCabe, head, Welsh Tribunals Unit; and Richard Morris, lately senior head of service, Children and Family Courts Advisory and Support Service.
