NLJ this week: Psychological manipulation

30342

Narcissism is a common accusation in claims made by separating couples, but it’s actually a complex psychological personality disorder, says David Emmerson, partner, Anthony Gold Solicitors, in this week’s NLJ

It could involve lack of empathy, grandiose fantasies, excessive attention-seeking and an inability to tolerate criticism, but ‘many people in a relationship breakdown can portray some or all of these traits’ without suffering the disorder.

Emmerson looks at both narcissism and parental alienation, and considers how family lawyers should handle allegations of such behaviour.
