An amendment to the Pensions Bill relating to national insurance contributions which will particularly benefit women has been voted through by the House of Lords. The amendment allows people with broken career histories to extend the time in which they can make up to nine years’ additional national insurance contributions to top up their basic state pension. Under present rules, it is only permissible to pay a voluntary contribution within six years of missing a year’s contribution.
