MPs have called for statutory regulation of bailiffs. In a report published this week, the Justice Committee describes the current system of individual certification of bailiffs by the courts as a rubber-stamping exercise. It calls for a regulator to be established, with powers to stop unfit bailiffs or debt enforcement companies from practising, and to regularly review enforcement fees imposed on debtors. It recommends setting up an independent complaints body, separate to the regulator, and for all bailiffs to wear cameras when visiting homes and businesses.
