Proctor loses gamble

Pringles are crisps, and therefore subject to VAT, the Court of Appeal has decided. The decision means Proctor and Gamble, which had argued Pringles were cakes and therefore exempt from VAT, must now pay £100m of tax for the past and about £20m per year in future. Argument centred on the “potatoness” of the crisp.
