Law firm Simpson Millar has continued the expansion of its national public law and human rights team with the appointment of solicitor, Alexandra Kenney.
With extensive experience in prison law, criminal defence and criminal appeals in addition to civil litigation, Alex joins Simpson Millar where she will now specialise in trafficking and asylum support, unlawful detention and false imprisonment, children and young people’s rights, actions against the police and HMPS, and inquests.
She will also draw on her experience working on claimant-focused legal aid work and working with those with vulnerabilities, both in the custody and the wider community.
Her arrival further bolsters the 17-strong London-based public law and human rights team, which supports clients with matters including inquests, claims against public authorities, and judicial review claims, and which was recently recognised for its work by the Legal 500 UK 2023 Guide.
Joining from Kesar and Co Solicitors, Alex is a member of the charity INQUEST, which provides expertise on state related deaths and their investigation to bereaved people, policy makers and the media. She is also a legal panel member for Centre for Women’s Justice, offering advice and legal assistance to women and girls who have been subjected to gender associated violence and discrimination.
This is the latest in a string of new hires for Simpson Millar’s expansive and highly regarded public law division, which has also recently welcomed Catherine Hegarty to its Public Law and Human Rights team.
Commenting on Alex’s arrival Chris Callender, a partner and Simpson Millar’s head of claims against public authorities, said: 'Alex’s passion and commitment to giving high-quality legal representation and advice to people who have been let down by a local or central public authority will make her an exceptional addition to our team, and we are delighted to have her on board.'
Alex added: 'I am excited to be joining such an extensive and highly regarded public law team.
'Victoria and the wider team have a long-standing reputation for bringing legal challenges that have wider policy implications, without forgetting the clients that are at the heart of the issues, and I am very much looking forward to working alongside and supporting them with this work.'
