National law firm Stone King has strengthened its growing Manchester office with the appointment of a new employment partner, Laura McHugh.
Laura, who joins from Forbes Solicitors, brings almost 17 years’ experience in employment law, having previously worked at Eversheds Sutherland, and Manchester firm JMW Solicitors. Laura has significant education sector expertise, regularly advising colleges, schools, academy trusts, and higher education institutions. She has also been a trusted advisor to a number of local authorities and housing associations, particularly in the North West.
Laura advises on all staff-related matters including discrimination, whistleblowing, restructures, industrial relations and TUPE. She is an experienced investigator and frequently handles complex employment tribunal proceedings.
Her appointment signals continued growth for the firm, and particularly the firm’s York Street office in Manchester, which has increased its team of experts from three to 16, since opening three years ago. As well as education, the firm also advises clients in the charity, faith, business and social enterprise, private client, and public and regulatory sectors.
Laura says she was attracted to Stone King’s social values and commitment to growth, alongside its deep understanding of the issues and challenges facing public sector organisations, which has earned it a respected reputation on a national level.
Laura adds: “I am delighted to be joining Stone King’s highly regarded employment team, particularly at a time of significant change brought about by the Employment Rights Act.
“I’m looking forward to helping clients navigate those changes and Stone King, with the experience and profile it has, in a number of sectors including education, is ideally placed to do that.”
Jamie Otter, partner and head of the Manchester office, says: “I am delighted to welcome Laura whose experience and understanding of the sector, and passion for making a difference, really stands out and I know will be a huge asset to the firm and our clients.
“This significant appointment reflects not only our commitment to providing the best service to clients, but also our continuing commitment to growth in Manchester.”
