Regulatory expert joins firm

Zaf Bashir is bringing more than 20 years’ experience to Knights Professional Services after joining the firm’s Derbyshire office as a partner in the regulatory team.

“The legal market has changed significantly throughout my career and after developing a strong client base and reputation in the East Midlands I was keen to join a quality firm like Knights,” explains Zaf.

“I wanted to find the right place to continue growing my profession and Knights is the perfect fit. As one of the most ambitious and forward-thinking firms in the UK, I’m really thrilled to be joining the team—it was the top choice.”

Zaf is one of seven partners to join the firm’s Derbyshire office in recent months, a pivotal time for Knights as it completes the major acquisition of regional firm Darbys Solicitors which will see Knights become a top-100 law firm with 400 people and a £40m turnover.

David Beech, CEO for Knights, says: “Zaf’s knowledge and expertise in business will help us to further bolster our offering to new and existing clients. The changing legal landscape is causing what’s been cited as a ‘war on talent’ and this appointment is just another example of the calibre of professional we are attracting at Knights.

“We’re not just a law firm, we understand the needs of businesses and are committed to delivering the best possible service to help them to grow.

“Zaf’s appointment is one of many in recent months that is not only putting our Derbyshire office on the map, but growing the network of professionals that will be based across seven regional offices.”

Momentum is building behind proposals to restrict children’s access to social media—but the legal and practical challenges are formidable. In NLJ this week, Nick Smallwood of Mills & Reeve examines global moves, including Australia’s under-16 ban and the UK's consultation
Reforms designed to rebalance landlord-tenant relations may instead penalise leaseholders themselves. In this week's NLJ, Mike Somekh of The Freehold Collective warns that the Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024 risks creating an ‘underclass’ of resident-controlled freehold companies
Timing is everything—and the Court of Appeal has delivered clarity on when proceedings are ‘brought’. In his latest 'Civil way' column for NLJ, Stephen Gold explains that a claim is issued for limitation purposes when the claim form is delivered to the court, even if fees are underpaid
The traditional ‘single, intensive day’ of financial dispute resolution (FDR) may be due for a rethink. Writing in NLJ this week, Rachel Frost-Smith and Lauren Guiler of Birketts propose a ‘split FDR’ model, separating judicial evaluation from negotiation
