Arbitration member joins chambers

20 Essex Street has announced that Judith Gill QC will join chambers as an arbitration member based in Singapore, as of 1 May 2018.

Judith is highly experienced in the field of international arbitration, and has been a partner with Allen & Overy since 1992. She previously spent ten years as the head of the firm’s global international arbitration practice, and is also the current president of the London Court of International Arbitration. Her particular areas of arbitration experience include those relating to energy and infrastructure projects, insurance claims, and construction disputes.

Global co-head of Allen & Overy’s international arbitration practice Matthew Gearing QC commented: ‘Judith has been at the heart of the firm’s practice for many years and has provided invaluable support, guidance and friendship to numerous of the firm’s lawyers, me included. Of course, she will be greatly missed, but I have no doubt she will be in demand as an arbitrator at 20 Essex Street.’

Duncan Matthews QC, co-head of 20 Essex Street, stated: ‘We extend to Judith our warmest welcome to 20 Essex Street. She is a true luminary in the field of international arbitration whose calibre and expertise are a natural fit with the experience of the set’s existing profile of arbitrators.’

Judith herself said: ‘A&O has given me a level of encouragement, support and opportunity beyond all my expectations. I have had the privilege of working with immensely talented and dedicated individuals there at every level for more than three decades and I will miss them greatly. The time is right however to move to the next stage of my career and I will be joining 20 Essex Street. I am delighted to be joining such a prestigious set of chambers as an arbitrator member.’

She added: ‘These are exciting times for arbitration in Singapore and I thoroughly enjoy living and working here. It will continue to be my home base for the foreseeable future.’
