IPW gets tough on will-writers
The Institute of Professional Willwriters (IPW) and its Scottish counterpart, has signed up to a new UK-wide scheme to set tough standards for codes of practice.
The Trading Standards Institute’s (TSI) new consumer codes approval scheme launched this week. Consumers will be able to look for the TSI approved code logo or search an online database of members.
TSI chief executive Leon Livermore says the new scheme has “an important sting in the tail” because it will be a criminal offence for a will-writing firm which displays the logo not to comply with the code.
IPW chair Paul Sharpe says: “We believe that it’s vital that for any code to have value, it must be verified and endorsed by an independent body.” Otherwise, some will-writers might just “pay lip service” to the code, he added.
The Ministry of Justice has ruled out formal regulation of will-writing services in England and Wales.
