Appointments at the Supreme Court

Lord Sales has become deputy president, and Lord Doherty a justice, at the Supreme Court. Both were sworn in this week at a ceremony conducted by the court’s president Lord Reed in Courtroom One

Lord Sales takes over from Lord Hodge, who has retired.

Lord Doherty was previously a judge at the Court of Session and High Court of Justiciary in Scotland for 15 years. His earlier career included stints prosecuting cases as Advocate Depute and advising government as standing legal counsel to the Ministry of Defence and the Scottish Office.

Speaking after the ceremony, Lord Reed said: ‘I greatly look forward to working with both of them.’
