US lawyers report clients expressing a lot of interest in Brexit over the summer, with US business concerned about the potential impact.
Now, however, the Brexit queries have tailed off. After an “initial burst of interest and surprise”, business is watching to see how the UK deals with the uncertainties that have arisen before adopting any course of action, according to Bob Kyle, partner at Hogan Lovells, who was in London this week for a conference.
On the potential for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) between the US, Japan and ten other countries, Kyle said President Obama still has a chance of pushing it through the “lame-duck” session of Congress before the new President takes over. However, some Republican Senators have “meaningful problems with it, for example, Senator Mitch McConnell has said he finds the tobacco provisions unacceptable. Both presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, oppose the TPP.
