Writing to Justice Committee chair Andy Slaughter MP last week, Lammy said the government would bring forward secondary legislation later this year to allow recording and broadcasting in the chief magistrate’s court and the administrative court. This will enable the public to watch sentencing remarks by the Chief Magistrate, who deals with extradition and special jurisdiction cases, and parts of judicial review cases.
Lammy and the Lady Chief Justice, Baroness Carr, will also ‘establish a joint working group to explore the scope for further expansion of broadcasting in the criminal courts’.
Filming has been allowed in certain circumstances in the High Court and Crown Court since 2020.
