Three new Justices have been appointed to the Supreme Court, and seven Lords and Lady Justices of Appeal to the Court of Appeal.

Lady Justice Arden DBE and Lord Justice Kitchin will join the Supreme Court on 1 October 2018, followed by Lord Justice Sales on 11 January 2019.

The trio will replace Lord Mance, former Deputy President of the Court, who retired this month, and Lord Hughes and Lord Sumption, who are due to retire in August and December 2018, respectively.

Lady Hale, President of the Supreme Court, said: ‘I am delighted that the Supreme Court will be joined by three new Justices in the coming months, each of whom has led a distinguished judicial career.’

Dame Mary Arden practised mainly company law at the Bar and in 1993 became the first woman judge assigned to the Chancery Division at the High Court. She served as Chairman of the Law Commission of England and Wales from 1996 to 1999.

Sir David Kitchin specialised in intellectual property at the Bar and has been a Senior Judge of the Patents Court as well as a member of the Enlarged Board of Appeal of the European Patent Office. Sir Philip Sales has been First Treasury Junior Counsel (Treasury Devil) and continued to act in the renamed post of First Treasury Counsel Common Law until his appointment to the High Court, Chancery Division in 2008.

Over at the Court of Appeal, meanwhile, Mrs Justice Nicola Davies, Mrs Justice Rose, Mrs Justice Simler, Mr Justice Baker, Mr Justice Green, Mr Justice Haddon-Cave and Mr Justice Males have been appointed to fill current and forthcoming vacancies.
