A quiet revolution has occurred in the CILEX section of the legal profession
As of this month, all restrictions blocking CILEX Lawyers from becoming Crown Prosecutors have been removed, following the passing into law of the Victims and Courts Act 2026.
Previously, Crown Prosecutors were required to hold a general qualification granting a right of audience in relation to any class of proceedings in any of the senior courts. The Act removes the need for the general qualification, which means CILEX Lawyers can progress to senior prosecutorial roles.
Sara Fowler, CILEX president, said the change recognised members’ ‘specialist skills and expertise’.
