Colm Murphy—Cooley

Firm recruits life sciences patent partner in London

Cooley has announced the appointment of Colm Murphy, a highly respected IP lawyer with more than 20 years of experience. Colm joins as a partner and member of Cooley’s life sciences patent counseling & prosecution practice.

Colm, formerly a partner at Venner Shipley in its chemical and life sciences practice, is a European patent attorney and a chartered patent attorney with a practice covering a broad range of complex IP matters in the life sciences arena. He has strong relationships with clients in the biochemical, pharmaceutical and medical device fields. His practice covers drafting and prosecuting patent applications, European Patent Office oppositions and appeals, freedom-to-operate clearances—as well as advising on IP portfolio/risk management strategies and IP monetisation.

“I’ve known of Cooley’s market-leading US life sciences patent work for many years and the firm is gaining the same reputation in the UK,” Colm says. “I’m looking forward to strengthening Cooley’s international patent practice and contributing to its growth in London.”

“Colm’s arrival strengthens our UK patent capabilities and our comprehensive global life sciences practice,” says Justin Stock, managing partner of Cooley in the UK. “He has a proven track record of success representing clients in high profile oppositions before the European Patent Office on the most challenging matters.”
