UK holders of .eu domain names will not be able to renew them after Brexit, the European Commission has warned.

Neither will UK residents and UK-based organisations be able to register a .eu domain name post-Brexit. The restriction will affect about 300,000 domain name holders

In a Notice to Stakeholders last week, the Commission reminded holders that the registry for .eu domains, EURid, can unilaterally revoke the domain names if the requirements for ownership (being resident in, or established in, the EU) are not met.

Sarah Wright, Head of Trade Marks at CMS, said: ‘In view of the significant uncertainty surrounding Brexit and any potential transitional arrangement and withdrawal agreement, it would be prudent for companies owning .eu domain names to review their domain name strategy now, and to register an alternative domain as a contingency.’
