The government is planning ‘an independent review into the operation of the Human Rights Act’, which will take place ‘in due course’, the Lord Chancellor, Robert Buckland QC has confirmed in a letter replying to Harriet Harman, Chair of the Joint Committee on Human Rights.
Buckland wrote: ‘The UK remains committed to the European Convention on Human Rights and will continue to abide fully by our obligations under it.’ He said the government would ‘look at the broader aspects of our constitution including the balance between the rights of individuals and effective government. This includes a commitment to updating the Human Rights Act’.
