Slater Heelis aim to help couples whose family members have financial interest
Manchester law firm Slater Heelis has launched an innovative mediation service designed to help the increasing number of divorcing couples whose parents or family members have a financial interest in their marriage.
Parents often have financial interests in the divorcing couple’s marital home, or will have made other loans. In-laws then contribute to the acrimony, cause delays and push up costs by interfering in the divorce settlement as a third party.
Slater Heelis family lawyer Helen Miller said: “For the past ten years it has been harder than ever for people to get a mortgage and we have seen an increasing number of couples relying on parents and family members to help them get on the property ladder.
“When relationships break down the in-laws are then stuck in the middle as the couple divide their assets. The understandable instinct of most parents is to take sides with their own child and get their investment back so what our Generation Gap service does is to listen to everyone involved in the case, to get a clear picture of the family assets and to get them to work together to find a practical solution that works for everyone.”
