Justice in Wales pledge

The First Minister of Wales, Mark Drakeford, this week pledged to bring forward all the recommendations within the scope of the Welsh Assembly that were made by the Commission on Justice in Wales report, led by former Lord Chief Justice Lord Thomas, published on 24 October. 

The Commission’s 78 recommendations included that Wales have more powers over its legal system—for example, running its own legal aid system and appointing many of its own judges. It highlighted the long journeys faced by many court users and a ‘serious risk to the sustainability’ of legal practice, particularly high street practices.
