Dame Sue Carr took over as head of the judiciary this week when she was formally sworn in as the Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales
She makes history as the first woman Chief Justice, and is the 98th person to hold this office.
Dame Carr said: ‘I do not underestimate the challenges that lie ahead, and I look forward to approaching the role with energy, enthusiasm, and positivity.’ She paid tribute to her predecessor, Lord Burnett’s resilience during the pandemic.
The role has some 400 statutory duties, including representing the views of judges and magistrates to Parliament and government.
