In addition, the Prime Minister has announced that a full and independent inquiry will be launched into the UK’s response to the pandemic in Spring 2022. Delaying the inquiry should, according to Johnson, ensure that additional burden is not placed on the NHS, the government and scientific advisors as they continue to the battle with coronavirus.
Acknowledging that many would like the inquiry to commence earlier, Johnson confirmed that reports and parliamentary inquiries will continue to take place as they have done until now to make sure lessons are learnt throughout all stages of the pandemic.
In his statement, Johnson also announced the establishment of the UK Commission on Covid Commemoration to help remember those who have lost their lives to coronavirus, honour frontline workers and celebrate those who have developed the vaccines. Commission membership and terms of reference will be set out in due course.
