Neuberger speaks out on judges’ interests

Judges should not be expected to declare that they own shares in a company, or that they are council tax payers of a council, which is a party in a case they are hearing, according to Lord Neuberger, President of the Supreme Court. To do so is “tedious and a little ridiculous in most circumstances”, he said while delivering the FA Mann lecture at Lincoln’s Inn last week on the subject of how judges make their decisions. The Supreme Court is to “shortly” issue a statement that it will not routinely give out such information, although parties will be entitled to ask where they think such information is warranted.
