Peers are to hold an inquiry into how Parliament can effectively scrutinise the negotiations around Brexit.

The House of Lords EU Select Committee inquiry will highlight Parliament’s duty to hold the government to account, allow for public debate and ensure there is an audit trail for future generations.

Stakeholders are invited to submit evidence by 30 September 2016 on what practical challenges faced by Parliament, how to balance confidentiality with effective scrutiny and whether Parliament should be given a more enhanced role in scrutinising the negotiations.

The inquiry will begin with a public meeting on 6 September in Room 3, Palace of Westminster.
