Pillsbury—Steven James

Firm boosts London IP capability with high-profile technology sector hire

Global law firm Pillsbury has appointed Steven James as a partner in its intellectual property practice, further strengthening its growing London office. James joins from Morrison Foerster and will focus on helping clients protect, defend and monetise their IP assets across the technology and innovation sectors.

Recognised as one of the UK’s leading IP lawyers, James advises technology-driven and venture-backed businesses on the protection, management and commercialisation of their intellectual property. A solicitor-advocate with extensive litigation experience, he has acted before the UK and EU IP offices, the High Court and Court of Appeal, and the Court of Justice of the European Union. He has been listed in The Legal 500 UK, IP Stars, WTR 1000 and IAM Patent 1000, and was named to The Lawyer’s 2025 ‘Hot 100’ for his work supporting start-ups.

Firm chair David Dekker said: ‘Steven adds important depth to our global intellectual property team, reinforces our on-the-ground IP offering in the UK, and presents additional pathways to engage with London’s early-stage community.’ Michael Zeliger, global head of IP, added: ‘His arrival expands our global capabilities and enhances our market-leading offering to startups and emerging companies.’

Commenting on his move, Steven James said: ‘Pillsbury holds a well-deserved place in the heart of the innovation economy. The firm is widely recognised for its expertise in the technology sector, has a flourishing London office and a long-standing record for excellence in cross-border matters. For me, Pillsbury is a fit in every sense of the word.’
