More than four out of five adults in England and Wales support Treasury proposals to separate legal regulators from professional bodies, according to research conducted by ComRes. The research into independent regulation was commissioned by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). SRA CEO Paul Philip says: “Public confidence is key and, as this polling shows, people say they will have greater trust in their solicitor if they know they are independently regulated.” The Treasury has said it will consult on whether regulators should be independent of representative bodies.
